The Lychgate

Public Statement regarding the Lychgate 28th May 2025

Further to public statements made in December 2024 and January 2025 it is with regret that the Parochial Church Council (PCC) of Midhurst Parish Church must report that little progress has been made to date in effecting a repair of the lychgate.
The structure is being mechanically supported by protective scaffolding, which is preventing any deterioration of the underlying problem and to ensure public safety. The wooden posts, facing the market square, appear to have eroded under the flagstone flooring and are collapsing in on themselves with the weight of the structure above them.
Regrettably, there is now a dispute as to who is liable for the maintenance and repair of the lychgate
We are unwilling in a public statement to detail the complexities of this situation and the nature of the dispute but rather invite any interested party to contact the Parks Team of Chichester District Council, who will be able to give an update to the situation.
Please understand that the church is NOT a party to the dispute and therefore we have no further information to share on the lychgate or its future.
