Ignite is the church youth group for young people in years 7,8 & 9.
The group led by Dave (the vicar) and Tania Pons began in the 2015 summer holidays with a session for young people about to start secondary school. Since then we have been meeting roughly fortnightly with a group of young people who chose the name Ignite.
Ignite sessions are varied. We have held a spaghetti and marshmallow building contest, learnt how to fold napkins, made bookmarks with tassels, made crowns for the fete, had a quiz and had a couple of film nights. Each session also includes a time for a thought or Bible study and a prayer – themes have included Jesus the Servant King, Jesus our friend, and a session in church about the Easter story. One constant with all Ignite sessions is food! Whether its hot chocolate and cake, pizza and popcorn or cream tea food is very important!
Some of the group wrote about why they like Ignite…
‘It’s friendly and welcoming. God is at the centre. No-one is left out. It’s a way of making new friends. The leaders are fun. Everyone loves it! (Plus there is free food!)’
‘I like Ignite because it has a friendly atmosphere and all the activities are enjoyable and useful. It is very nice to have a group for people of a similar age to gather and do the things we like to do. It’s nice to have a friendly environment to go to after a long day at school.’
‘Ignite – food, fun, activities’
‘I like the community side of Ignite and how everyone is friends with each other and helps people out. I like that on hot days it’s nice and cold inside. They always give us junk food and spoil us!’
‘Everything (especially the food).’
‘Activities and crafts, socializing, social skills, EVERYTHING!’
Ignite has room to grow, and new members are always welcome. Regular additional activities include film nights, a summer BBQ, a sleepover in the church and May Camp 2019!
Our regular fortnightly meetings are 3:45-5:30pm on a Monday at St Ann’s Hall. If you would like more details about the group please contact us.
